Youth Division will be added to the next Open Colt Starting Competition!
There will be 2 divisions
Pro Division
If you have taken payment for starting a colt, started 5 or more colts.
Amateur- If you have started learning how to start colts, have started 3 or more colts, ( have amateur division bring their own colts)
Novice- Have never started a colt or have only started one.
( Novice competitiors need to bring a gentle colt for competitiors to use?)
Youth Divisions-
Age- 10-14 years old ( what if we have the youth bring a colt to work with)
Age- 15-19 years old
Compete for cash, buckle & prizes in the East Idaho Open Colt Starting Competition March 28 starting at 4:30pm, March 29 10-4, March 30 10-4.
$200 early entry fee if paid with cash or venmo $210 is paid with card
Pay back to 3 top spots
Buckle to the winner, clothing/gear to the the second and third
Colts will be drawn at random, colts will be well bred 2-3 year olds, minimal work done (halter broke)
March 28, 2025 : Registration 2:30pm, Colt Draw, Rules. 4:30pm -9:30pm rounds.
March 29 : Start time 9am, lunch on site, end about 4-5pm
March 30 : Start time 9am, lunch on site, end about 6pm

Requirements for colt :
Horse must sound, good health and regular worming/vaccinations
o No abuse of horse (judge’s discretion)
o Option of having trained equine (saddle horse) in round pen with colt. May
not use trained equine for Final round
o One human helper (18 years and older) with or without saddle horse may be permitted in the
round pen with trainer, trainer will be the only one to ride their assigned
horse. Helper may assist in lunging or ponying colt, not permitted to tack or
ride colt (unless discussed prior to event)
o One mandatory 5 minute break per round pen session - may take more
but not less. 10 point reduction in score if ignored.
o Only snaffle, bosal, side pull or halter for riding. No shank bit or
mechanical hackamore allowed
o TOOLS: saddle, halter, rope, bridle, spurs, crop, lunge whip, flag stick,
surcingle, lunge lines, side reins, saddle pad, desensitizing devices,
Obstacles. Tools are brought by the trainer. Friday afternoon (at meeting) Judges approval for all tools being used in the competition. Trainers may not leave their colt during competition to retrieve other tools (points may be deducted for “use of pen wrangler” if wrangler leaves to retrieve items)
*All tools, equipment and training practices are subject to approval by Judges or East Idaho Colt Starting Competition Directors. Judges or directors reserve the right to “call out”
excessive, or inappropriate use of tools, equipment, or training practices. Penalties/disqualification are judges discretion. Trainers agree to comply with all rules and decisions made by signing the entry form. Trainers must be 16 yrs or older. If under 18, parent must be on site. Trainers given 60 min Friday, 75 min Sat, 75 min Sunday and then final round is 10 minute obstacle course.
Time will be called at 30 min left, 10 min left & 5 min left and 1 minute warning will be called, competitors will need to use this time to remove equipment off the horse and get all the tack and equipment off the horse by time end. 20 point deduction for going over time.
* Scoring Will Be Presented to the Competitors Friday Night
