Wayne Peebles Memorial Colt Starting

The memorial competition is a colt starting event held in Wayne Peebles’ honor, where skilled horsemen and women take untouched or lightly handled colts and, within a set time, demonstrate safe, humane, and effective training. It’s not just about speed or flash—it’s about feel, timing, talent and communication between colt and trainer.

Competitors are judged on horsemanship, communication, and the colt’s progress and willingness. Alongside the competition, the event serves as a fundraiser to support local horsemen and women with hardship, that cowboys and cowgirls face due to injuries from training horses.

  • Youth will have 10 minutes but only 2 to 4 obstacles to get thru.
  • During the final round with obstacles, you have the option to have a song of your choice playing in the background and you will have a wireless mic so you can talk to the audience during final round.
